The German Sturmgeschütz III (StuG III) was one of the most important armored fighting vehicles of World War II. Originally designed in the late 1930s as a turretless assault gun to provide direct fire support for infantry, it was built on the chassis of the Panzer III medium tank. Instead of a rotating turret, the StuG III mounted a fixed superstructure armed with a 75 mm gun, which allowed it to carry heavier armament and maintain a lower profile. This design made it cheaper and faster to produce compared to turreted tanks.

Early versions, armed with short-barreled guns, were primarily used for infantry support, destroying bunkers, machine gun nests, and fortified positions. As the war progressed and Germany faced increasingly capable Soviet armor such as the T-34, the StuG III was upgraded with longer-barreled high-velocity guns, turning it into a formidable tank destroyer.
